Planned Giving - Bequests

MAKING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL OR TRUST

One way for you to support Marquette University's mission is to leave us a gift in your will or trust, also known as a bequest. Over the years, Marquette University has benefited greatly from bequests from our alumni and friends. These gifts have played an important role in the growth and success of the university.

Types of Bequests

There are a number of ways you can make a bequest to Marquette University.

  • A cash bequest of a specified dollar amount
  • A bequest of specific assets such as securities, real estate or marketable collectibles
  • A residuary bequest, in which Marquette University receives all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate after other beneficiaries have been remembered
  • A contingent bequest, in which property is distributed to Marquette University only if the primary beneficiary is deceased

Benefits of Bequest Gifts

There are no limitations on bequest gifts. All charitable bequests are deductible for federal estate tax purposes with no limit on the amount of the deduction. In addition, bequests are generally not subject to state inheritance or estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs.

Bequest Language

In order to make a bequest, you should speak with your attorney to make certain that your exact intentions are specified and contact Marquette's Office of Planned Giving to document the intended purpose for your gift (i.e.: general purposes, scholarship, a particular college or program). We are available to you and your advisors to answer questions and create a gift that reflects your values.
